Tech 101: How and why a fluid coupling works

If you’re familiar with automatic transmissions, then you know that the torque converter necessary for the transmission’s operation is essentially a type of fluid coupling, but how exactly does a fluid coupling work? The U.S. Army felt it was necessary to train its mechanics in a fluid coupling’s operating principles in 1953, and the resulting instructional video – which we found via Hackaday – remains a good primer on those principles today. Also, for you carspotters, a couple cool military vehicle cameos.
